About this category

A heart is the first shape most children can draw unaided, which makes it a fair one to hand a beginner. Six of these keep to a single big outline and vary what happens inside it or around it: a ribbon tied across with a bow at the top, a pair of feathered wings, daisies filling the middle, a balloon on a curling string, three of graded sizes in a row, and two open hands lifting one from below.

The rest ask for patience. One whole mandala is built from hearts and nothing else, one big outline is cut into eight bands of stripes, dots, waves and checks, a padlock lies under an ornate key, seven hang from a sagging cord, a tree drops them where leaves should be, and a cat sleeps with its tail brought round to its nose. Red is not compulsory. The banded sheet reads best when no two bands repeat a shade, and the garland looks tidier with the bows left white.
