A princess in a flowing gown and a golden crown stands on the balcony of a lamp-lit castle at dusk above misty turrets and a rose garden.

Princess stories

Princess stories from the Brothers Grimm, Perrault and Andersen: Cinderella, Rapunzel, Snow White, The Princess and the Pea, and The Twelve Dancing Princesses.

In the older tellings the princesses rarely wait. One feels a pea through twenty mattresses and is believed because of it; another makes a careless promise to a frog and her father holds her to it. These retellings leave that as it stands.

The collection is also wider than the name suggests: in Puss in Boots and The Brave Little Tailor, the princess is the reward at the end of someone else’s adventure. Some of these tales suit a four-year-old who came for the dress and the castle, others a ten-year-old ready for something longer and darker.

Each shows an age range and a reading time. Where an older, unsoftened version exists, it has its own page and is labeled.
