Animals are how most children meet a story for the first time. There is a wolf at the door, a bear who finds someone has been sitting in his chair, a donkey who decides he would rather be a musician than a beast of burden.

The animals carry the lesson, so nothing has to be explained. Several of these start at age three, because knowing what a goat looks like and what a wolf looks like is enough.

Most of them read aloud well: repetition a child joins in with, and endings that land in a single sentence. Aesop’s fables come last: short ones, each ending on its moral.
