The Enormous Turnip

2 min read ages 2 and up

Grandfather plants a turnip, and it grows bigger and bigger until it is enormous. He pulls and he pulls, but it will not come up, so he calls Grandmother to help.

Once upon a time, Grandfather planted a turnip. It grew bigger and bigger, until it was enormous.

Grandfather in a hat and leg wrappings stands in his garden bed, gazing at a white turnip as tall as his hip, its leaves towering over him.

Grandfather went to pull the turnip out of the ground. He pulled and he pulled, but he could not pull it up.

Grandfather leans far back, feet planted, pulling the thick green stems of the huge white turnip with both hands, while the turnip stays fast in the dark soil.

So Grandfather called Grandmother to help. Grandmother held on to Grandfather, and Grandfather held on to the turnip. They pulled and they pulled, but they could not pull it up.

Grandmother called the granddaughter. The granddaughter held on to Grandmother, Grandmother held on to Grandfather, and Grandfather held on to the turnip. They pulled and they pulled, but they could not pull it up.

The granddaughter called the little dog. The dog held on to the granddaughter, the granddaughter held on to Grandmother, Grandmother held on to Grandfather, and Grandfather held on to the turnip. They pulled and they pulled, but they could not pull it up.

The dog called the cat. The cat held on to the dog, the dog held on to the granddaughter, the granddaughter held on to Grandmother, Grandmother held on to Grandfather, and Grandfather held on to the turnip. They pulled and they pulled, but they could not pull it up.

The cat called the mouse. The mouse held on to the cat, the cat held on to the dog, the dog held on to the granddaughter, the granddaughter held on to Grandmother, Grandmother held on to Grandfather, and Grandfather held on to the turnip.

The whole line leans back as the giant turnip lifts from the soil: Grandfather, Grandmother, the girl, the dog with her skirt in its teeth, the cat, the mouse.

They pulled and they pulled, and out came the turnip!
