A young traveler seen from behind on a hilltop path at sunrise, a bundle on a stick, a valley and river below, a ship at sea, a castle and a giant beanstalk

Adventure stories for kids

Old tales of leaving home to face ogres, trolls and giants, from Jack and the Beanstalk to East of the Sun and West of the Moon and Odysseus and the Cyclops.

In Jack and the Beanstalk a boy trades the cow for beans and climbs to an ogre’s house. Momotaro, the Peach Boy sails to an island of devils with a dog, a monkey and a pheasant. In The Seven Ravens a girl walks to the end of the world to free her brothers.

The Bremen Town Musicians is a seven-minute story for children from four: four old animals run away and chase robbers from their supper. Odysseus and the Cyclops and East of the Sun and West of the Moon take about fifteen minutes and are better from seven.

Many of these stories come in threes. Jack climbs the beanstalk three times, and in East of the Sun and West of the Moon three old women each give the girl a golden gift. Pause before the third time and let your listener guess what will happen.
