Fairy tales about cleverness

In The Hare and the Hedgehog a proud hare mocks the hedgehog’s crooked legs and loses a race to him. The hedgehog runs about three steps and ducks down in his furrow, while his wife, who looks just like him, waits at the far end and calls out “I’m here already!”

The crow in The Crow and the Pitcher is afraid she will die of thirst. Instead of flapping about, she sits still, thinks, and drops small pebbles into the deep pitcher, one after another, until the water reaches her beak.

In Baba Yaga the girl is clever before she even leaves home: she asks her real aunt for advice first. The cat she feeds bacon later refuses to scratch her, because in all its years with the witch it never got so much as a bone.

The Bremen Town Musicians win a house by stacking themselves at a window and making their music all at once. The robber who comes back mistakes the cat’s eyes for coals and the rooster for a judge, and the robbers never dare go near again.
