About this category
Some of these turtles live in the sea, swimming past seaweed and shells or gliding over a coral reef among small fish. Others are tortoises on land, walking through a meadow, nibbling a strawberry or carrying a ladybug on their shell.
Younger children can start with one big turtle: the one sunning itself on a log in the pond, the hatchling climbing out of its egg or the mother sea turtle with a baby on her back. The hatchlings crossing the beach and the pond with three turtles are more detailed.
Every shell is split into large plates, so it can turn into a patchwork. Try a slightly different green or brown on each plate, then pick out the flowers and tulips drawn on some shells in brighter colors. A wash of blue around the bubbles brings the sea pages to life.
The sea turtle pages fit a summer at the beach or a school project about the ocean, and the girl handing a tortoise a lettuce leaf is a natural pick for kids who keep one as a pet. On a wet day, try the tortoise sheltering from the rain under a huge leaf.
